L'équipe qui guide sur cette zone éruptive depuis la première éruption de 2021, composée de gens de Grindavík et de Keflavík qui ont vécu les événements. Le Fagradalsfjall est entré en éruption à plusieurs reprises entre 2021 et 2025, et le terrain en porte la trace : lave fraîche, roche fumante, cratères qui n'existaient pas il y a quelques années. Une partie de ce que tu foules s'est mise en place pas plus tard qu'en juillet 2025. La randonnée fait 8 km aller-retour, 5 miles, avec environ 300 mètres de dénivelé positif. Reykjavík est à une heure, ce qui explique que ce soit l'un des rares endroits au monde où l'on peut atteindre en une matinée les suites immédiates d'une éruption. Les groupes restent petits, et une petite surprise islandaise est incluse. Un point à bien vérifier au moment de réserver. L'option avec prise en charge à Reykjavík comprend trois arrêts que l'option sans transport n'offre pas : la traversée de la péninsule de Reykjanes, un Géoparc mondial UNESCO ; la zone géothermique de Seltún et ses boues bouillonnantes ; et le Kleifarvatn, l'un des lacs les plus profonds d'Islande. Si tu viens par tes propres moyens, tu retrouves le groupe au départ du sentier et tu n'as que la randonnée. L'itinéraire longe aussi la zone évacuée près de Grindavík, où les éruptions ont chassé les habitants d'une ville active. Les guides en sont originaires : le récit est donc de première main, et non rapporté.

  1. Víkurbraut 58B, Grindavík

    SELF-DRIVE OPTION, if you have a car: the meeting point is at 10:45 am in Grindavík, in the parking area next to the Geo Hotel. The former Netto supermarket has no visible signage left, so use the Geo Hotel as the reference. Do not wait inside the hotel.

  2. Reykjanes

    The drive starts across the Reykjanes Peninsula, a UNESCO Global Geopark, with geothermal activity, lava fields and volcanic craters through it. The comparison people reach for is the surface of Mars. This part is included for guests who choose the Reykjavík pick-up. On the self-drive option you meet at the Fagradalsfjall trailhead instead.

  3. Grindavik

    Through the evacuated eruption zone near Grindavík, where the recent activity has changed the ground and interrupted ordinary life. This is the part of the day that shows what an eruption does to the people living next to it, not only to the landscape.

  4. Fagradalsfjall Volcano

    Fagradalsfjall is the most active volcano in Iceland at the moment, and the eruptions that ran from 2021 to 2025 left fresh lava flows, ground that still steams, and new craters. The hike is 5 miles, 8 km, round trip, with about 984 feet, 300 metres, of ascent. Some of the terrain formed days or months ago. It sits an hour from Reykjavík, which makes it one of the few places anywhere to see the immediate aftermath of an eruption safely and up close.

  5. Take a short walk through the vibrant and steamy Seltún…

    A short walk through the Seltún geothermal area: boiling mud pools, fumaroles, and mineral deposits in colours that look artificial. It is a sharp contrast with the lava fields nearby. Included for guests who choose the Reykjavík pick-up. Self-drive participants join the group at the Fagradalsfjall trailhead. Weather permitting.

  6. Kleifarvatn Lake

    A stop at Kleifarvatn, one of the deepest lakes in Iceland, between volcanic hills and black sand shores. A short stop, for photographs. Included for guests who select the Reykjavík pick-up. Self-driving participants meet the group at the Fagradalsfjall trailhead. Weather permitting.

  • What to Bring: Layered waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, water, snacks, gloves, phone/camera. Walking poles and crampons provided if needed.
  • Lava Visibility: Glowing lava only visible during active eruptions—never guaranteed. Tour adapts to any new accessible areas.
  • Extra Stops: Seltún and Kleifarvatn only included for tours returning to Reykjavík. Weather permitted.
  • Weather Impact: Hiking time and route may change due to weather for safety and comfort.
  • Safety Rules: Tour follows official volcanic activity guidance. If access is closed, the route changes to safe alternative volcanic sites.
  • Winter Driving: Roads can be icy, snowy, or windy—allow extra travel time when driving to the meeting point.
  • By booking this tour, you confirm that you have read and understood the full tour description. While the volcano area is publicly accessible, joining a guided tour is a personal choice made for added safety, local knowledge, and deeper context. In the case of an active eruption, the itinerary may be adjusted to prioritize access to the current eruption site and main viewing areas. Although we may follow the same trail used by others, this remains a fully guided experience.
