Etna nord-Piano Provenzana, Via Provenzana, Linguaglossa

The meeting point is in the car park by the chairlift that operates at Etna Nord in winter. Look for the second of the four buildings there. It is the Chiosco Bar Mareneve, not the Chiosco Bar Etna Nord, and the distinction matters.

Piano Provenzana

Piano Provenzana is Etna Nord's tourist station, quieter than the south side and closer to the ground the volcano has actually worked. The guides meet the group here. There are bathrooms, and the café serves breakfast, coffee or tea and a pastry before anyone sets off. A short briefing follows, with the equipment handed out. What you are standing on is the 2002 flow. The eruption of 27 October 2002 destroyed the tourist station that used to be here. The access road is fully drivable, so your own car gets you to the start. In winter carry chains or fit winter tyres. The 4x4s leave from here, up the northern flank across lava fields and lateral craters, to 2,960 m.

The guides meet the group at 7:45 a.m. at Piano Provenzana, with departure between 8:00 and 8:15. Between May and October there is an afternoon run at 1:00 p.m. as well. Authorised 4x4 vehicles take a 9.5 km panoramic track on the north side, where the groups stay smaller. The climb runs from 1,800 m to 2,960 m through forest, recent flows, a lava channel, eruptive fractures and lateral craters more than 40 m deep, with the guides present for the whole drive and the whole walk. The views off the unpaved road: northern Sicily, the Aeolian Islands, the Strait of Messina, Calabria, both seas. On a rare fully clear day, the Madonie, the Gulf of Catania, Syracuse, Augusta and the Valle del Bove. The ground shifts from woodland to craters to high-altitude desert before the trek starts near 3,000 m.

Mount Etna

The summit hike starts at 2,960 m. Five kilometres and 550 m of ascent lead to the summit area and the four main craters: North-East, Voragine, Bocca Nuova and South-East. The guides pick the safest route towards the most active crater that can still be approached, and change it when gas, heat or fractures make that necessary. The altitude runs from 2,960 to 3,323 m, so fitness matters and mild altitude effects are possible. The return is where this itinerary differs from the others: a long descent on foot from 3,300 m down to 1,800 m, about 7 km and 1,500 m of negative gain, for experienced hikers with knees to match. It can feel harder than the climb. The path follows soft scoria and sandy gullies through recent lava and the wide Piano delle Concalze, then 2.5 km of ski slopes on rougher, stonier ground before the finish. Total distance is 12 to 13 km, with small variations possible, over roughly 6 hours.

Piano Provenzana

Piano Provenzana sits on the north flank and is reachable by car or hire car on paved public roads the whole way. Pine forest and lava fields surround it. The October 2002 eruption remade the area and took out the original buildings, leaving ground that is worth looking at in its own right. There are souvenir shops, cafés and bars for breakfast, lunch or a coffee, and water to refill bottles. It works as a ski resort in winter and as the departure point for guided walks in summer. Cars and camper vans park in the blue-lined areas. Anyone with a booking meets their volcanological guide at the on-site points. It stays quieter than the other stations on the mountain.
