Der Acatenango ist 3.976 m hoch. Der Aufstieg gilt als mittel bis schwer und dauert je nach Kondition und Pausen viereinhalb bis fünf Stunden. Unterwegs gibt es zwei Kassenhäuschen, beide begleicht der Guide, und am ersten bekommst du ein Armband. Mittagessen gibt es auf halber Strecke. An der Stelle namens El Tonel sind 80 % des Aufstiegs geschafft; von dort sind es dreißig Minuten bis zum zweiten Kassenhäuschen und weitere fünfzehn bis zum Camp. Das Camp heißt Ixcanul, ein Maya-Wort für die innere Kraft eines Berges, der jederzeit ausbrechen kann. Es liegt gegenüber dem Fuego, dem Vulkan, den alle sehen wollen. Um 18:30 Uhr wird das Lagerfeuer entzündet, dazu gibt es heiße Schokolade und Marshmallows oder Kaffee oder Tee; das Abendessen ist um 19:30 Uhr, und danach gibt es ein Glas Wein mit Blick auf den Kegel. Der Gipfelaufstieg beginnt um 4 Uhr für den Sonnenaufgang, zurück im Camp bist du um 7 Uhr zum Frühstück und Packen. Der Abstieg endet gegen 11 Uhr, das Fahrzeug fährt in Miratenango ab und erreicht Antigua zwischen 12:30 und 13:15 Uhr, und die Ausrüstung geht zurück an die Agentur. Bei Stornierung mindestens 24 Stunden vor Abfahrt bekommst du den vollen Betrag zurück.

    The adventure starts at the Experience GT agency, with the briefing and the recommendations for the climb, then the lunch and the equipment are handed over.

  3. Aldea La Soledad

    A vehicle from Antigua to the village of La Soledad, at the foot of Acatenango, where the walk starts on the private land at Miratenango.

  4. We begin our ascent in Miratenango

    The ascent begins at Miratenango: the last bathroom with running water, and a shop for last-minute errands. The route is private and saves 1 hour 20 minutes on the usual one.

  5. Acatenango

    Acatenango is 3,976 m, graded medium to high, and takes about 4.5 to 5 hours depending on your condition and your stops. At the first payment booth the guide pays the entrance fee and a wristband goes on. Lunch is halfway. El Tonel marks 80% of the climb; from there it is 30 minutes to the second booth, also paid by the guide, and 15 more to camp.

  6. Acatenango

    Camp Ixcanul. The bonfire is lit at 6:30, with hot chocolate and marshmallows, or coffee or tea. Dinner is at 7:30, and afterwards a glass of wine with the Fuego volcano in view.

  7. Acatenango

    At 4 a.m. the climb to the summit of Acatenango starts, for sunrise. Back at 7 a.m. for breakfast and packing before the descent.

  8. Aldea La Soledad

    The descent ends at about 11 a.m. at Miratenango, and the vehicle reaches Antigua between 12:30 and 1:15 p.m.
